How to Create Opportunities for Yourself
Creating Opportunities for Yourself
The “Creating Opportunities for Yourself” series is based on the concepts presented in the book entitled “If you don’t know where you are going, you’ll probably end up somewhere else,” by David Campbell, Ph.D
Introduction:
Why do we have a section on creating opportunities for yourself on a web site that is geared towards middle aged and senior women? Because life is a journey not a destination (as the old adage goes.) Life isn’t about endings, as many of us have come to find out.
Life is about stepping stones on an everlasting journey called life. When we were younger we had goals to get married and have a family, or to have a great job. Once we obtained that marriage or job, we were initially thrilled. But as time goes on, without any renewal, our one-time goals that we have now achieved, become every day routine tasks, and eventually chores. Once we’ve achieved one goal it no longer seems all that important. Now we want to move on to the next goal. Goals are stepping stones or mile markers on the journey down the path of life, not endings.
We all go through stages in our lives, the stages may vary from person to person but in general they go like this. First we’re children longing to be cool teenagers. Then when we become teenagers we begin to plan our lives as independent adults. Our next cross-roads come in our early twenties when we decide to pursue a career and/or get married and have a family. At the end of that stage we come to another fork in the road when we have to figure out what we want to do with our lives once the kids are grown, or we’ve reached the height of our careers, or both. We can never stop planning, hoping, and creating opportunities for ourselves. To be without choices or hope of new things or going through life waiting for things to come to us would be a truly unpleasant way of living.
So we have a section on creating opportunities for ourselves because we are still living and still traveling along our path to somewhere. We may never reach somewhere, but we will always be on the path, so let’s make the most of it. It’s never too late to create opportunities for yourself.
